Send 'Em Outside! It's a Good Thing.

02.19.2011

I’ve been catching up on the LA Times from last weekend and I came across this article about the fact that kids who spend more time outside may be lowering their risk for near-sightedness later in life. Considering I just wrote an entry about TV harming babies’ brains, I thought it was fitting that I provide another example of how important it is for kids to be creative and see the world without a screen in front of them.

Staying True

01.09.2011

There really isn’t anything like doing something that you love. I spent the day working on a creative project…or rather, working on some promotional material for a creative project with the help of a group of people. When you find yourself with a group of creative souls and see projects moving forward, it’s so gratifying. Perhaps one day I might be able to make a living off of this.

But whatever may come, I hope to keep these projects as a high priority should we have a kid. It’s important to have an outlet where you do something you love. A child would make it difficult for me to work on such projects like I did today but I would shrivel up and die inside were I to stop. I’d have to make it work somehow. I would just have to. Besides, I’d feel like I’m cheating my child out of a proper example of staying true to yourself and your dreams.

It Still Creeps In

11.07.2010

Today, I have nothing interesting to say. I was at home for the entire day working on a creative project that entailed me to turn our living room and kitchen upside down. I must say that I have the world’s most understanding husband. As he left this morning, I apologized for the mess and he replied lovingly, “That’s OK. Such is my bohemian life.” This made me love him all the more because, as I state in my “About Me” profile, there is never a dull moment with me, with the next whirlwind adventure always hovering around the corner.

But, to all this to kids… I’m exhausted. I’ve had about 8 hours of sleep since Friday and the entirety of what was last week kept me scrambling to catch up with time, which I failed to do. I have a number of projects going on at the same time and, though I’m not complaining, I can’t help but wonder if I’ll be able to be half as busy with the kinds of things I love to do were we to have a kid. Everything is a give and take, yes, sure, and I know I’ve explored that. But I’m so scared that a child will take away opportunities for me to do the kinds of projects like what I did today. It’s that fear creeping in all over again…

Schools Kill Creativity

09.17.2010

I long ago came to the conclusion that society stifles creativity and, as we get older, sucks it dry so that by the time we reach the age of 18, we’re conditioned to think that only the math and sciences = good and that the arts = bad.

If the world were run by the likes of Vejune, I’d make those in college follow one of these two formats:

  1. Pick a major in the sciences or business
  2. Pick a minor in the arts

Or

  1. Pick a major in the arts
  2. Pick a minor in the sciences or business

I don’t think enough people with a job-guaranteed major like pre-med have a balanced background in the creative arts just like I don’t think those who major in the arts think about their financial future and take enough classes in economics, marketing, or business.

In the following video, Sir Ken Robinson speaks much more eloquently on this topic than I ever could and even though it is 20 minutes long, I highly encourage taking the time to listen to what he has to say. He’s funny, engaging and makes a whole helluva lot of sense.
